In Sarasota County, where more than a third of the population is 65 and older, the demand for services for the aging is high. Most of them grew up in an era when many families—usually the first source of comfort and respite—turned their backs on them. Indeed, one in five LGBT adults “cited fear of double discrimination [for being LGBT and older] as a significant concern about aging” in a recent national survey, according to the nonprofit National Center on Caregiving. This fear has often resulted in older LGBTQ individuals living their last years in isolation, not only bereft of help with caregiving and chronic illness, but also an emotional connection.
Food Delivery Program
The Senior Friendship Center's Home Delivered Meals program provides well-balanced meals to older adults through a partnership with GA Foods. The meals are prepared fresh and are quickly frozen to assure optimum freshness when heated. Meals are delivered to seniors’ doors frozen so recipients can use them at their own convenience. Home delivery is a convenient way to get meals to those who can’t cook or are homebound. In addition, home-delivered meals are a great way for long-distance care providers to be sure their loved ones are receiving healthy, nutritious meals.
LGBTQ Grief & Loss Support Group
Sarasota Friendship Centers offers programs to help seniors in the LGBTQ community find friendship and support. Each month a discussion group meets as well as a support group for LGBTQ elders who are grieving a loss or are caregivers.
Meeting in-person meeting every Wednesday 11am – 12:30 pm.

LGBTQ National Hotline
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) National Senior Hotline provides telephone peer-support, as well as factual information and local resources for our senior community. No matter where they live, LGBT seniors have a place to call when they need peer-support, information, and local resources. Many times callers are very isolated, some in the closet, or and in need of a caring, non-judgmental person to talk with.
